I have to acknowledge that doing this on purpose with the whole thing being an op, or just being extremely prepared to exploit the opportunity fully if this happens to occur are both legitimate tactics.

It drew out so much enemy weaponry and manpower, probably easily enough to justify the loss of a couple of planes. Even if the original crash was 100% chance that’s no reason not to go all in on the response to bait the enemy into reacting.
