Their position near the mouth of the strait at its narrowest point is effectively what’s giving them the ability to ‘close’ the strait.
At the moment it is largely insurance companies that are doing most of the work in keeping it closed. Rather than Military threat. Refusing payouts and dropping coverage. So Ship owners are stuck as they don’t want to risk their boats or crews. The payouts to any lost crew or their next of kin. Plus repairs and or the loss of the ship outright would be super expensive.

I am reminded how Grant and Farragut bypassed the high ground of the rebel artillery to take Vicksburg and open the Mississippi. I don't believe that there is any military means Iran can keep Hormuz closed??
