I switched in 1992. Back then it was Slackware, installed from 3.5 floppies, and manually building the kernel and X11.
I think that's about the time I was using OS/2. It would actually multi-task, and Windows programs ran better with that than on it's own platform. I don't think I would have attempted to manually build that stuff. Good on you.
