Ascension was a TV series about a outer space ship that had 700 people on board to colonize a planet in case nuclear weapons destroyed earth during the JFK years.
Later the crew found out they were on earth in some warehouse the entire time.
Oh man! What a premise for a TV show. The feeling of betrayal and manipulation would be off the charts if you learned that had been done to you!
There was another movie like that called 'The Village' (2004) about a small remote community in Pennsylvania who stayed within their fenced village due to the instilled fear of nameless humanoid creatures, known only as "Those We Do Not Speak Of", that were known to inhabit the surrounding woods. Staffed watchtowers and tall poles with oil lamps lined the village perimeter for protection. The color red was banned, as it attracted the creatures. But it was all a lie, perpetuated by the elders to prevent the offspring and grandchildren from leaving the community and moving away to live in the real world right outside their gates.
