Remember that the U.S. and Indonesia recently have been discussing protecting the Strait of Malaca?
If you look at the Strait of Malaca, between Malaysia and Sumatra... the majority of Asian undersea internet cables pass through that narrow waterway.
Maybe there is a broader reason for the U.S. interest in the Strait of Malaca other than just shipping.
