Imagine if the elites had instead decided: we are going to use the full extent of our wealth, influence, and intellectual prowess to solve the problem of abundance for all of mankind without loss of freedom or significant degradation of the environment. That would be a very different operating premise. If the thought ever crossed their collective minds they probably had a bout of uproarious laughter before sweeping it out of consideration.
