Scientists used to commonly use a different word to describe horribly off-base and proven untrue predictions. The theories that produced the bad predictions were called "falsified". Being called falsified was a kiss of death. Except in the wonky upside-down world of policy-driven climate science, where failure meant not failure, but justification for more funding.
