I tell my family that, if you're ever shopping at Watmart (or any other store for that matter) and feel uncomfortable... go to the tool section and pick up a machete, an axe, claw hammer or crowbar. Put it at the top of the shopping basket and keep it in easy reach. At other grocery stores, a very large kitchen knife or butcher's cleaver works just as well.
Go about your shopping as normal, pushing the shopping cart and keeping the weapon very visible and handy. You are no longer a "soft target". Anyone starting trouble will think again before approaching.
After shopping, just leave it at the counter. If you feel a need to bring it with you to the car, then just keep the receipt. You can always return it later for full refund.
If anyone at the store asks why you are pushing a cart with a meat cleaver next to the basket handle, or a crowbar or claw hammer... just tell them you are shopping.
