Democrats (or pro-Southern/Democratic-aligned appointees): Roger B. Taney, James M. Wayne, John Catron, Peter V. Daniel, Samuel Nelson, Robert C. Grier, and John A. Campbell were all appointed by Democratic presidents or generally aligned with Democratic/pro-Southern interests.
Dissents: Benjamin R. Curtis and John McLean were not Republicans; Curtis had been a Whig and later associated with anti-Democratic positions, and McLean had been a longtime Whig who later aligned with emerging anti-slavery Republicans in sentiment though not formally a Republican appointee.~
