I had a similar, but not near death, experience. I grew up in a Christian family. If you asked, I would say I was a Christian. Then, when I was 18, I realized that after I died, I couldn't tell God, I'm with those people, and be able to go to heaven. I didn't like the alternative. So, as a legal matter, I decided to make sure I had done what was necessary to get into heaven. So, I confessed I was a sinner and asked Jesus to be my Savior. Immediately, my perception changed. it was like a curtain opened up to another dimension and God was there. And just like described, there was overflowing love that I had never experienced before. I found a verse later that described my experience. Romans 5:5 says, "Hope does not put us to shame, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us." And as the video showed, this love is not specific, it is just overflowing love like in John 3:16, "For God so love the world..."
God is light (1 John 1:5), God is life (1 John 5:11, 20), and God is love (1 John 4:8). That kind of sounds like what was drawing people out of the darkness.
