Indeed it was. The Man was a certified Looney Tune. Granted many of the Guerrilla fighters of the period for both sides in the lead up to and during the Civil War were frankly sociopathic nutcases. Most of whom should have seen a Hangmans noose.
Political convenience, time, and changing politics ultimately means various events and parts of the story ultimately are selectively omitted and or emphasized based off prevailing political winds, modern politics, and whatever the modern popular regional culture is.
