They did in my classroom. The local branch of the NAACP even gave me an award for the % of Afrocentric males I got through the state tests. The geometry test was a bear.
THAT would ONLY depend on the "INTESTINAL FORTITUDE" of the individual to excel...However, teachers sometimes did not TEACH the entire class, but rather the "upper" ones whose parents paid a lot for tuition!!!!!
Private Catholic School. And a lot of my peers, when they saw me for the first time, could not believe that I had gone past them in many areas, including serving OUR GREAT COUNTRY FOR 30 YRS!!!! They were ashamed, as they should be...When I was asked WHERE WAS I DEPLOYED, THEY could not believe where I and others had served!!!!!!
