Millennial Who Grew Up In The 1990s Says Boomers Don't Understand 'We're Working 3 Times As Hard For A Third Of What They Had At...
For many millennials, the economy can feel like a game of musical chairs where previous generations already grabbed the seats, refinanced them at 3% interest and now insist there are still plenty left if younger people would just "budget better."...
it's somewhere in the middle.
Yes they are complaining and don't realize how bad their predecessors had it.
But, if you look, wages definitely have not kept up with inflation. Rent has far outpaced wages, college tuition has outpaced even inflation, etc.
I work with a guy who is 30, he's young enough to be my kid. He is a professional, worked his way into a position through his skill and hustle that he isn't really qualified for on paper but excels.
His wife has a government job that pays decent but she doesn't really like.
They have 2 small kids and the wife would rather stay home with them.
They are renting a small house from a relative, and would love to get something bigger.
They were looking for properties before covid and decided to save for another year or 2.
Bam. Now they're screwed. Anything suitable is about 100g too high.
Are they screwed though? yes, in a way.
Is it self inflicted? In a way- timing, being too picky, maybe not thrifty enough? Perhaps.
Is it also due to circumstances beyond their control? I would say so.
50 years ago a young family in their situation would be able own property that suits them by now, IMO.
