interesting thing happened to me last week, having a quick afternoon beer with friend who is in "our camp" as we have had conversations before about all that's going on, and friend of the other person joined us...after a few minutes of the usual banter, this third person said "i'm a democrat", which was totally off-topic, not related to anything...just tossed a gauntlet down, i thought...i just smiled, and DID NOT engage...that was difficult for me, but figured not worth the effort at this point...my friend was probably holding her breath waiting for my blast, but i just simply said, "everything will be very different in this country by the end of this year, just stay tuned" and excused myself to order another beer...
Your friend's friend was trying to get a rise out of you. I've gotten to where I respond the same way. They can believe it or not at this point. I no longer try to wake folks up anymore and refuse to argue with the norms, I will discuss politics with like minded frens only. If people see what's happening, they do. If not, oh well.
I think you handled it great, it's never worth the effort and always leave them with something to ponder.
