I've always thought they should be paid the mean wage of their constituents and then after two terms return to the general public. Live by the laws they helped enact and go back to work like the rest of us. No life long bennies

It was meant for citizens to SERVE on their own dime! Or a reasonable stipend to offset costs and hardship.
The Congress was NEVER intended to be a full-time job or full-time career to be lived upon by the benefits of service! That is not SERVICE it is . . . "payment" for "services rendered" . . . to WHOM!
They earned around $35,000 a year less than 50 years ago and were prohibited from playing the stock market. Attitudes have changed.
