The windows depict parachutes descending from the night sky around the Virgin Mary, honoring the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions.
St. Michael Window:
Another window features St. Michael, the patron saint of paratroopers, which includes imagery representing the 82nd Airborne Division's combat jumps and the lion of Normandy.
"They Have Come Back":
The windows include the French text "Ils sont revenus / They Have Come Back," a tribute to the liberators.
Origin:
The windows were dedicated in 1972 and were designed based on a sketch by local artist Paul Renaud, created in 1945.The church is also famous for the story of American paratrooper John Steele, whose parachute caught on the church steeple during the D-Day invasion.
Stunning. I saw the Tapestry of Bayeux, France in 1994, when I visited Normandy for the 50th Anniversary of the Normandy landing. Another worthwhile bucket list item.
I watched again Ike - Count Down to D-Day last evening. That was one heck of a decision that Ike had to make, Should we delay or should we go. Will the storm front, which is moving faster than the landing force abate before force reaches Normandy. Should the paratroop drop happen further inland so as to draw some German forces away from the beach, or close back from beach where they can support the landing force, but suffer much higher (anticipated 70%) casualties. Many more decision weighted into the decision and tens of thousands of lives separated the right from wrong choice.
The odds were high that the landing could fail, that the forces would be pushed back into the sea. It was a miracle that the landing was so successful.
Thanks MD! I look forward to watching this. We recently saw the new movie, PRESSURE about the battling Meteorologists who were working for Ike. I think you'd enjoy it.

It is nice to know that they are still as gracious and thankful as they were when I visited the Normandy sites ~40 years ago!
Yes! All over Southern France from Nice to Normandy on the Northwest Coast are VERY appreciative and even teach our history in their schools!
The old war movie Burgess Meredith was stuck on bell tower whole battle and lost his hearing from the bells ringing. Good movie.
Or Red Buttons.
Yes...it was Red Buttons portraying John Steele in The Longest Day
A Classic book and movie!
Thanks for sharing this. Very beautiful.
