I think it is a little more subtle than Democrats hating "America" or "Americans," as a place or a people. I think they hate "to be an American." It's a matter of spiritual identity, where "being American" involves a commitment to a constellation of beliefs and values that they reject, and actually loathe. They feel defiled in a way that can only be corrected by a complete overthrow of all things "American." It has been said before (and often) that "these people are sick," but this is the nature of the sickness. In the fullest meaning of the word, they are "unAmerican."
