It is an innocent issue. The Slaughter (AKA Massacre) of the Innocents is horrific because innocents are dependent, vulnerable, and trusting. Some are sentient or domesticated and bond with humans. These are traits that cause the urge to protect and cherish in standard-issue humans.
People without empathy are, frankly, to be watched, and there is good reason to mistrust them.
