In other news: I have kept dogs all my life. My most recent dog was from a kennel, and they recommended that I purchase a crate. So I did, (or I would not have the dog - she came and made sure it was right there, in my bedroom).
Well, I found that the dog has a safe space. as a puppy she would be allowed to demolish toys in there, for example. Now I have eliminated a dog-issue: with them chewing shoes. If she is given something she is 'allowed' to chew, she takes it into her crate.
She is briefly 'locked in' when cats are being fed (for her own protection), or when visitors arrive, when she will be let out, once they are sitting down. For people to be standing is too much to bear. It leads to jumping with excitement, you see. And that can frighten some.
There's a reason a breeding pig is put in a cage -- to keep it from lying down on the piglets and killing them. The cage is large enough for the piglets to get in and out, but not the sow.
