When we were kids, we lived near the town of Stockbridge, MA, where Daniel Chester French had his studio. He was the sculptor of the Lincoln Memorial statue and there were plaster versions on site, plus loads of other interesting material. He did not actually carve the marble, the Piccirilli Brothers from NY did that, under his supervision and following his 6-foot plaster model. I'll bet there is a lot about him at this space under the memorial.
