I know about Project Gutenberg, but I prefer the actual PDF scans of the old books from Archive.org.
I remember when Project Gutenberg was text only and didn't have e-book versions. I originally downloaded all Project Gutenberg texts from an FTP site at UNC-Chapel Hill (sunsite.unc.edu). I could download them in bulk from there. It's harder to get the collection now. I haven't downloaded in a few years, so I'm sure there are more books that I would want.

I hereby nominate you for Pede book club president. We'll be in charge of coffee, tea and goodies. Name your book.
