This isn't that deep. They've owned the land for hundreds of years, since back when feudalism was a thing. Its just that they're one of the only members of the british aristocracy to get with the times and developed their land. Its not like they shadily bought up half of london somehow. They've owned it for centuries after it was given to them as a fiefdom back when it was literally farmland managed by peasants.
