I have always believed that paying out of pocket for your own bloodwork is far better at determining where you are health wise than anything else.
If you go the traditional route of PCP to specialists or wait to have lab work/bloodwork done you are often caught in the web of "modern" medicine where they kick you around. For example you ask for bloodwork but a PCP will send to specialist first and then the specialist will kick you back to your PCP if they haven't found anything. And only then according to them the blood work and lab work can be done. But wait then the PCP sends you back to the specialist as a follow up.
So here is where you have to ask questions. If the specialist has the blood work and lab work done they do not need to send you back to your PCP if they have determined if anything was wrong as a specialist in a specialized field.
The PCP is not specialized for that specific study of medicine. The flipside of course is that if nothing was wrong specifically in the first place with your health why did you need to go to a specialist when you asked for bloodwork to be done? PCPs are supposed to provide general care?
So if you find a PCP that will work with you directly and not kick you around to other care physicians they are worth their weight in gold but they are very few quality doctors like this.
Cute!
And pretty much true!
