There are ways to make a site appear to be hosted on one machine and actually not be. Various types of forwarding using tunnels, IP spoofing, PAT, NAT, hairpins and so forth. And yes you can fake icmp and traceroute responses to spoof the actual route to the server. So, yeah,I agree, not buying it.
I get a kick out of these types of A-HA articles, they make for a good laugh. Though they can snag people that do not know how it really works. Reminds me of a reporter back in the day trying to come across as authoritative saying the 120 thousand kV lines are down on the west side as we are showing....so you are saying the 120,000,000 volt lines are down?
Yes , they are meant to snag the unknowing.
