This is a BS excuse! At my company the badges are cached in a system off the network. If the network goes offline, the badges will still work if you've entered the building at a time when the network was active. Now if you've never been in that building before then that would be a different story, but this one smells of bullshit. Sounds more like they were denied access by a higher power.
