Look at the Pseudepigrapha and the Apocrypha. These "non-canonical" texts were removed from the final iteration of the Bible at the 3rd Ecumenical Council, for being 'second-order' books. They are still widely-read in the Eastern Orthodox world, and shed great light about the early Christian odyssey, but the Catholic church had all-but-forbidden them (because, you know, 'narrative control').
