Impeachment happens in the house. That's already been done. Twice. A trial to remove happens in the Senate. if the impeachment is done while the politician is in office there must be a trial after. If the president (or judge, senator, congressman or almost any other political figure thats elected, yes it applies to a lot of different positions not just president) is already out office (it's happened before with lower ranking politicians) then they will be barred from holding public office ever again. Of they are in office it would remove them from office. Mconnel came out and said the trial will be in 2 weeks today. Or he's considering it will be in 2 weeks. That's how it works
