As of Feb. 15, 2024, 50 members of Congress—seven members of the U.S. Senate and 43 members of the U.S. House—announced they would not seek re-election in 2024.
Of the U.S. Senate members not running for re-election, six—U.S. Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Tom Carper (D-Del.), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.), and Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.)—announced their retirements from public office, while the other—U.S. Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.)—is running for governor of Indiana.
Of the 43 U.S. House members not seeking re-election:
13—four Republicans and nine Democrats—are running for the U.S. Senate. Two—one Democrat and one Republican—are running for state attorney general. Two—one Democrat and one Republican—are running for governor. One Democrat is running for President of the United States. 25—11 Democrats and 14 Republicans—are retiring from public office. As of February 15, 2022, 42 U.S. House members had announced they were not running for re-election. Thirty-five members had announced at this point in the 2020 cycle, and 44 had announced at this point in the 2018 cycle.
The seven U.S. Senators who have announced they are not running for re-election are one more than the six U.S. Senators who had announced their retirement at this point in the 2022 election cycle. Four had done so at this point in 2020, and three had done so at this point in the 2018 cycle.

More than 500 people were arrested in a statewide operation in California to rescue victims from the clutches of prostitution and human trafficking.
Several people were assisted in this operation among dozens of law enforcement agencies to mark the closing of January, a time when human trafficking awareness month is commemorated.
Ninety-five law enforcement agencies were part of the operation with undercover agents called “reclaim and rebuild.”
“We arrested more than 500 people and suspects who were the criminals,” said Miguel Meza, spokesman for the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.
Including 40 alleged "sex traffickers or exploiters" and 271 suspected of attempting to pay for sex. Additionally, 54 adults and 11 youths were rescued, including a 14-year-old girl.
“These victims are treated so badly, they abuse them not only sexually but beating them, they do horrible things,” said Los Angeles Sheriff Robert Luna.
One of the areas in LA County where undercover operations were carried out was on Holt Avenue in Pomona.
There, 12 men were arrested, two of whom are registered sex offenders.
“Those involved in human trafficking we are going to aggressively pursue,” said George Gascon, Los Angeles County District Attorney.
According to the authorities, predators continue to increasingly use social networks to recruit possible victims of sexual exploitation.
These are accounts that may not be easy to track and these people approach people who they already see can be easily manipulated and offer them either a job or offer them material things to be able to attract them, Meza said.

Overview
People, societies and companies face the reality of a world in transformation. In addition to the seemingly endless supply of shocks, with the tragic violence in the Middle East being the most recent, deep structural shifts are clearly afoot from geoeconomics to climate change to artificial intelligence. Given this level of uncertainty and the high stakes involved, there is a clear need to move past the diagnosis of challenges firmly towards solutions.
With trust eroding, long-term visions may be too abstract to rally around, while merely focusing on responses to current shocks will leave everyone vulnerable to the transformations at hand. What is needed are new and upgraded platforms for dialogue, stronger partnerships, agile policy frameworks and effective deployment of technologies that can lead to practical and implementable gains for societies across both short-term and strategic horizons.
The theme Against this backdrop and to instil a measure of collective agency, it is necessary to start restoring trust at three fundamental levels: into the future, within societies and among nations. Therefore, the 54th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum will convene under the theme Rebuilding Trust to provide the crucial space to step back and focus on the fundamental principles driving trust, including transparency, consistency and accountability.
The method To meet this ambition, the architecture of the Annual Meeting 2024 will focus on the core roles and functions developed throughout its evolution. As such, it will:

INTERPOL, the international police organization, has announced the seizure of $300 million in assets and the arrests of about 3,500 suspects as the result of a months-long investigation into voice phishing, romance scams, online sextortion, investment fraud, money laundering and business email and e-commerce fraud.
The organization, based in France, explained its investigators found trails of criminal activity across 34 nations.
The investigation, called HAECHI IV, ran from July 2023 through December, and focused on online fraud. Authorities then froze various associated bank and virtual asset accounts through its "Global Rapid Intervention of Payments" scheme, a "stop-payment mechanism which helps countries work together to block criminal proceeds."
One part saw the arrest in the Philippines of "a high-profile online gambling criminal" who had been targeted in a two-year manhunt by Korea's national police agency.
Authorities blocked a total of 82,112 suspicious bank accounts and seized $199 million in currency and another $101 million in "virtual assets," the organization reported.
"The seizure of $300 million represents a staggering sum and clearly illustrates the incentive behind today’s explosive growth of transnational organized crime. This represents the savings and hard-earned cash of victims. This vast accumulation of unlawful wealth is a serious threat to global security and weakens the economic stability of nations worldwide." explained INTERPOL spokesman Stephen Kavanagh.
"HAECHI IV’s 200% surge in arrests shows the persistent challenge of cyber-enabled crime, reminding us to stay alert and keep refining our tactics against online fraud, which is why INTERPOL operations like this are so important."
The report said investment fraud, business email compromise and e-commerce fraud accounted for 75% of cases investigated in HAECHI IV. Also dismantled was a large illegal gambling network.
Among the seized items were multiple NFTs, which are digital assets that can be in the form of photographs, videos, audio files, artwork, comic books, sports collectibles and more.
The report noted police in various nations continue to investigate, freezing assets and more.
An INTERPOL official in Korea, Kim Dong Kwon, explained, "It is remarkable that global efforts to stay ahead of the latest criminal trends have resulted in a substantial growth in operational outcomes.
"Despite criminals' endeavors to gain illicit advantages through contemporary trends, they will eventually be apprehended and face due punishment. To accomplish this, Project HAECHI will consistently evolve and expand its scope."
Several special alerts warning various police forces of the threat of fraud came out during the course of the investigation.
One warned of a new scam detected in Korea involving the sale of Non-Fungible Tokens with promises of huge returns, which turned out to be a "rug pull," a growing scam in the crypto industry where developers abruptly abandon a project and investors lose their money, the report said.
The second warned about the use of AI and deep fake technology to lend credibility to scams by enabling criminals to hide their identities and to pretend to be family member, friends or love interests.
