Holy Father, there we are, beginning the last work week of the year, not that there won’t be chores during the following two weeks. It still feels good to know I can rest a bit and meet some acquaintances and family members. I will finally be able to take a little time fixing some things which replacements would otherwise be a waste and continue the cleaning of my fields’ brambles. I certainly will be tired in some ways but then I can rest a bit between the cats on the sofa: there won’t be alarm clocks ringing every now and then, it shall be a virtuous Kaizen two weeks when I will just pretend to walk just a few baby steps in a direction before actually getting serious. That is how I want my holidays to be: impulsively productive so the spirit knows it has not become apathetic. I pray I still can surprise myself positively so.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Adelaide of Italy.

Adelaide of Italy (German: Adelheid; 931 – 16 December 999 AD), also called Adelaide of Burgundy, was Holy Roman Empress by marriage to Emperor Otto the Great. She was crowned with him by Pope John XII in Rome on 2 February 962. She was the first empress designated consors regni, denoting a "co-bearer of royalty" who shared power with her husband. She was essential as a model for future consorts regarding both status and political influence. She was regent of the Holy Roman Empire as the guardian of her grandson in 991–995.

Holy Father, one of the shutters on the front of our house had fallen down when we arrived on Friday evening. This involved getting a ladder and juggle with the leaf to repair it with whatever I had: pieces of wood, screwdriver… With the years, I develop a chronique fatigue and also a bad height phobia. Fortunately, the weather was with me and You inspired me enough patience and courage to properly fix this piece of wood until we get them all replaced later after the winter. I was not feeling able at first but You seeded me with all needed to accomplish this and I now feel like a better person for simply fixing such a matter with something else than my wallet. I praise You for inspiring me with such a practical Kaizen approach.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Maria Crocifissa di Rosa.

Maria Crocifissa Di Rosa (6 November 1813 – 15 December 1855) - born as Paola Francesca Di Rosa - was an Italian Roman Catholic professed religious and the founder of the Ancelle della carità (1839). Di Rosa worked first at her father's spinning mill where she - with his encouragement - tended to the spiritual and material needs of the female workers while gathering several women to dedicate their collective efforts to caring for the poor; this formed the basis for the establishment of her religious congregation. Her apostolate prioritized tending to the ill in hospitals and to soldiers going to the front. Her beatification was celebrated in mid-1940 and Pope Pius XII (who beatified her) canonized her over a decade later on 12 June 1954.

Holy Father, when You expect us to be somewhere and do something, You don’t just give us an opportunity, You let us notice it. Whatever oddity we come upon can be a Sign. Either it means « Do » or « Don’t ». In both case we have to be fully conscious of the choice we make. Knowing it comes from You makes us focus on why because, even if You have Your mysterious Ways, You want us not to be unconscious robots when we achieve in Your name. Finding one’s Faith does not come to one as if it had to be performed like a culinary recipe. Faith is the outcome of a personal Awakening, we cannot and mustn’t force our Faith onto someone else, nor can we question his own Faith.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Saint Spyridon.

Spyridon was born in Assia, in Cyprus. He worked as a shepherd and was known for his great piety. He married and had one daughter, Irene. Upon the death of his wife, Spyridon entered a monastery, and their daughter entered a convent. Spyridon eventually became Bishop of Trimythous, or Tremithous (today called Tremetousia), in the district of Larnaca. He took part in the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (325), where he was instrumental in countering the theological arguments of Arius and his followers. He reportedly converted a pagan philosopher to Christianity by using a potsherd to illustrate how one single entity (a piece of pottery) could be composed of three unique entities (fire, water and clay); a metaphor for the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. As soon as Spyridon finished speaking, the shard is said to have miraculously burst into flame, water dripped on the ground, and only dust remained in his hand (other accounts of this event say that it was a brick he held in his hand). After the council, Spyridon returned to his diocese in Tremithous. He later fell into disfavor during the persecutions of the emperor Maximinus, but died peacefully in old age.

Today in 1503 passed Sten Sture the Elder.

Sten Sture the Elder (Swedish: Sten Sture den äldre; 1440 – 14 December 1503) was a Swedish statesman and regent of Sweden from 1470 to 1497 and again from 1501 to 1503. As the leader of the victorious Swedish separatist forces against the royal unionist forces during the Battle of Brunkeberg in 1471, he weakened the Kalmar Union considerably and became the effective ruler of Sweden as Lord Regent for most of his remaining life.

Holy Father, supersticious people will notice today is Friday the 13th. Some will try the lottery, some others will hide under a rock. I personally notice it above all is Saint Lucy Day, which mostly Northern people celebrate a vibrant way by lighting candles and singing carols to enlighten an hemisphere where Winter begins. Like these people, it is our duty as Christians to always choose Prayer and Faith against the darkness that never ceases to seek its way into our souls. Every force in the nature has its counterforce, every particle has its antiparticle, except the photon, the seed of light, which is its own antiparticle. Light can’t be negated, it only can not being emitted. Share your Faith and Pray, this brings the light of God.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Antiochus of Sulcis.

Antiochus of Sulcis (died c. 127 AD) was an early Christian martyr of Sardinia. The island and town of Sant'Antioco are named after him. Antiochus is a figure associated with the Sardinian mines from which the Romans extracted minerals and precious metals; the Romans condemned prisoners of war and Christians to work these mines. His legend states that he was a physician during the reign of Hadrian. He had converted many people in Cappadocia and Galatia to the Christian religion, and was therefore tortured and sent into exile by the authorities. Antiochus was condemned to work the mines on the island that now bears his name. The island, inhospitable and isolated during this period, was named Plumbaria at the time, after its source of lead (plumbum). Antiochus, however, converted his jailer Cyriacus in Sardinia, and had built a small underground oratory on Plumbaria, and was thus condemned to death there.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Jane Frances de Chantal.

Jane Frances de Chantal, VHM (born Jeanne-Françoise Frémyot, Baroness of Chantal; 28 January 1572 – 13 December 1641) was a French Catholic noble widow and nun who was beatified in 1751 and canonized in 1767. She founded the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary. The religious order accepted women who were rejected by other orders because of poor health or age. When people criticized her, Chantal famously said, "What do you want me to do? I like sick people myself; I'm on their side." During its first eight years, the new order also was unusual in its public outreach, in contrast to most female religious who remained cloistered and adopted strict ascetic practices.

Holy Father, we reached a new hundred, the fifteenth since the crusade began. They say we finally are winning but I prefer using that verb in the past tense which is too soon now. NATO is still aggressively pushing for WW3 whilst draining the economies of its members’ populations, Americans above all. Syria is turning into Afghanistan 2.0 and the press is celebrating ISIS for this, Israel just conquered the Golan without even firing one shot and quietly being ignored by their new northern neighbour. The Euroland is in dire need of some executive layoffs with a priority given to its citizens’ voices. Having Donald Trump being president-elect again still is a good thing as we hopefully are past the years of obstruction we went through during hihs first term. I pray everyone keeps his eyes open and avoid resting upon his laurels until we reach the new golden era we so eagerly prayed for.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Eulalia of Mérida.

Eulalia was a devout Christian virgin, aged 12–14, whose mother sequestered her in the countryside in AD 304 because all citizens were required to avow faith in the Roman gods. Eulalia ran away to the law court of the governor Dacian at Emerita, professed herself a Christian, insulted the pagan gods and emperor Maximian, and challenged the authorities to martyr her. The judge's attempts at flattery and bribery failed. Eulalia was then stripped by the soldiers, tortured with hooks and torches, and burnt at the stake, suffocating from smoke inhalation. She taunted her torturers all the while, and as she expired a dove flew out of her mouth. This frightened away the soldiers and allowed a miraculous snow to cover her nakedness, its whiteness indicating her sainthood. A shrine over Eulalia's tomb was soon erected. Veneration of Eulalia was already popular with Christians by 350; Prudentius' poem increased her fame and relics from her were distributed through Iberia. Bishop Fidelis of Mérida rebuilt a basilica in her honor around 560. Her shrine was the most popular in Visigothic Spain. Around 780 her body was transferred to Oviedo by King Silo. It lies in a coffin of Arab silver donated by Alfonso VI in 1075. In 1639, she was made patron saint of Oviedo.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Juan Diego.

Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, also known simply as Juan Diego (1474–1548), was a Nahua peasant and Marian visionary. He is said to have been granted apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe on four occasions in December 1531: three at the hill of Tepeyac and a fourth before don Juan de Zumárraga, then the first bishop of Mexico. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, located at the foot of Tepeyac, houses the cloak (tilmahtli) that is traditionally said to be Juan Diego's, and upon which the image of the Virgin is said to have been miraculously impressed as proof of the authenticity of the apparitions.

Holy Father, Christians celebrate today the Immaculate Conception, the belief that the Virgin Mary was free of original sin from the moment of her conception. People in Lyon, France, also celebrate « La fête des lumières » and light some candles on their windows, which predates the Scandinavian Saint Lucia by about a week. I am keen on these celebrations as, in the Northern hemisphere, days are the darkest and it always provides us with opportunity to actually appreciate whatever light actually remains. Instead of complaining about how far we are from our warm Summer nights, we always should praise You for how happy we are with whatever we have.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Budoc.

The name Budoc, or Beuzec, means "saved from the waters" from the Breton beuziñ meaning "drown"; but Baring-Gould finds this "fanciful". In old Celtic, boudi means "victory" and "profit". Budoc of Dol (also Budeaux or Beuzec) was a 5th-century Breton monk and Bishop of Dol, who has been venerated since his death as a saint in both Brittany (in France) and Devon (in England). Budoc is the patron saint of Plourin in Finistère where his relics are preserved. Budoc is reputed to have been a grandson of the legendary Count Even of Brest, Viscount of Léon. His mother, Princess Azenor, was falsely accused of infidelity by her jealous stepmother, which enraged her husband, the King of Goëlo [fr], who ordered that the pregnant Azenor be thrown into the sea in a cask. (A tower of the Château de Brest is named for her.) Azenor invoked the help of Saint Brigid. The cask drifted for five months. Shortly after Azenor's baby was born, the cask washed ashore on the coast of Ireland. The story echoes Greek myth. A villager who found the mother and newborn child summoned the abbot of Beau Port, near Waterford, and the child was christened the next day. Azenor became the washer-woman of the monastery, and Budoc was raised there. Azenor's stepmother fell ill, and upon her deathbed she recanted the evil lies she had spread. Azenor's husband then sailed in search of her, and, arriving in Ireland, the couple was reconciled, but both died before they could return to Brittany. (However, a tradition in Cornouaille has Azenor founding a religious establishment at Cap Sizun). Growing up, Budoc studied at a monastery at Ardmore, thought to have been founded in the early 5th century by Declán of Ardmore, where he became a monk and later abbot. He eventually left Ireland, sailing in a stone trough that landed at Porspoder. Two stained-glass windows in the chancel of Saint-Budoc Church in Porspoder depict scenes from the life of the saint. At some unknown point, Budoc made his way to Dol, where he was named bishop of the region, possibly in connection with a monastery allegedly founded by Samson of Dol, whom he is believed to have succeeded as the local bishop.

Holy Father, I have not slept like this for a long time. It was just for 8 and a half hours, but my neck did not break my sleep every chance it had. I was inspired this week to take a quiet half hour every evening, before the prayer time, when I just read a book whilst sitting confortably with an automatic massaging device applied below my neck. This really soften my muscles which in return strain my neck much less. Sometime the solution to a persistent problem is not to address the problem itself, but rather its direct surroundings and whatever is under our own control. This leads me to this quote by Marcus Aurelius: « When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love. ». I praise You for yet another beautiful day to come.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Abraham of Cratia.

Abraham of Cratia or Krateia (c. 474 – c. 558) was a Christian monk from Emesa (now Homs) Byzantine Syria. Abraham was the most important of the bishops on the see of Kratia from its foundation in the 2nd century until its dissolution in the 12th century. He is recognized as a saint in the Christian church. He was born at Emesa in Byzantine Syria, where he became a monk. When he was about eighteen, the community there was dispersed by nomadic raiders. Abraham himself fled to Constantinople where he became procurator of a monastery there. When he was only 26 years old, he was made the abbot of the monastery of Cratia in Bithynia. Some ten years later, he secretly left for Palestine seeking a quieter life. He was subsequently made to return to his monastery, where he also was shortly thereafter made the local bishop of Cratia. He served as a bishop for 13 years before he retired about 525, and again left for Palestine, and remained there for the rest of his life, living a life of religious contemplation and having becοme a hermit. He lived in a monastery at the Tower of Eudokia. He died on 6 December, which would later be his feast day.

Holy Father, a Swiss friend of mine wanted to order something from a French company which would only allow deliveries to the EU member countries. He came and asked me whether he could have the goods delivered tour French home, which, given our intimate friendship, was obviously welcome. As he could not provide a French mobile number, he had to redirect the goods to a local grocery. Pity, we then had planned not to get there for the coming weekend and the retention policy is about 5 days. I then both contacted a neighbor and also the grocery to make sure the goods would be picked in time. No QR-code was to be shown: as my neighbor is a local monument who shops at the grocery, everything was simply happily abided. That is the system that works in smaller communities where exceptions are friendly taken care of, whilst in bigger ones, they are tolerated at most. Whenever dealing with legitimate queries from stranger, always make them feel welcome to your village. I praise You for this realisation.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Dalmatius of Pavia.

Dalmatius of Pavia (Italian: San Dalmazzo, Dalmazio) (died 254 or 304 AD) is venerated as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. It is possible that Dalmatius was simply a local preacher of northern Italy, but the century in which he lived or the manner in which he died is unknown. He was venerated at what was called Pedona (present-day Borgo San Dalmazzo). His biography was composed in the 7th or 8th centuries, its author perhaps a Lombard monk of the monastery of Pedona who was drawing from oral tradition. His biography states that Dalmatius was born at Forum Germarzorum (present-day San Damiano Macra) and became a churchman and evangelizer in Pedona. In the 10th century, when the area of Pedona was devastated during Muslim raids, Dalmatius’ relics were carried to Quargnento, where an inscription on his tomb read: [H]ic requiescit corpus sancti Dalmatii repositum ab Audace episcopo Astensi. In France, a tradition dating from the 9th century held that he died a martyr. Later legends state that he evangelized many cities of Piedmont, Emilia, and Gaul, and was killed for his faith in 254 or 304 AD. The Roman Martyrology, based on erroneous episcopal lists, considers Dalmatius a bishop of Pavia.
