Well the reason 737 MAX was grounded was because the engine placement can cause excessive pitch during takeoff that can lead to a stall and a sudden drop in altitude/crash.
Software and training was supposed to fix the issue.
Here is some more info about the 737s and how the training was done. I believe it included some sort of autopilot that "malfunctioned" and undertrained foreign pilots and flight engineers.
