He doffed his hat and extended it in salute. The spear is held out as part of that.
Is that normal? I cant find anything that shows that is a normal way to salute in the US military.
I’m not entirely sure if it’s normal or not as I’m not familiar enough with late 18th century military etiquette or protocol.

Excellent, thank you. Reading through the article and the little I know of the customs of the time, there were expected behavioral norms. Gentlemanly, cordial, etc. I saw nothing mentioned about a spear but “... and pull off his hat or cap with his right hand letting it down the length of his arm in a graceful easy posture” caught my eye. In this case, left hand since he held the spear in his right.
