Sweden’s top tax rate is 60% at $60K/year. And that’s not counting the 25% VAT. What’s worse is that we in the US do/pay for the vast majority of the research. Meanwhile our pharmaceuticals are selling to Europe for much cheaper cause they made laws against it.
Socialist medicine is only nice if you have a capitalist infrastructure to subsidize it.
Also add in that you have a lot of "undocumented" people going to hospitals that are forced to care for with no reimbursement from the individual. Homeless/drug addicts abuse the hospital system, increasing costs.
Yeah, it's truly terrible that we all pay into a big pot to pay for the NHS which is then free at point of use. /s
The bad thing about the NHS is the waste, beauracracy and freeloaders coming here from abroad and not paying their way.
It's a much better system than the US. I got acute appendicitus once and was rushed to hospital to have it removed. The main thing my wife had to worry about, costwise, was the car parking.
Having had the misfortune to be sick a lot and in hospital. In every hospital I was ever in there from Finland to Ireland and others, it seems like standard procedure to do endoscopy with nothing to knock you out. I let them do it once and it is hands the worst experience of my life.
In USA we use propafol and so while our system definitely sucks parts of the socialized model are barbaric. That was the word my American doctors called it.
I had an endoscopy without painkillers, it was certainly uncomfortable but nothing that would require me to be 'knocked out' for. It also meant I got to watch the camera feed, which was definitely odd :)
The entire medical infrastructure isxa major component of making you sick in the first place,
The medical establishment encourages tge very high carb food pyramid that is the source of most chronic disease today, from diabetes, to heart disease, to obesity (and the cytokine storms that it promotes) to cancer.
For heaven's sake, look at the advice they give on covid. Do you really believe this system is designed for your health?
In the UK a prescription costs about £9 to fill, no matter what it is, for a month's supply.
You pay extra £9 for additional medication, but that's also for a month's supply.
This socialized medicine sounds awful.

Here's a good article on why the US health care system is in such shambles.

Not entirley, no. However it also still serves a purpose and does actually save lives.
