There was no reason to say "former president". Its obvious Lincoln wasn't the current POTUS. The only reason it said it that was was to possibly show us 4 years later that this was planned.

Good point. “Former” president as opposed to current or future. No reason to use “former”. It would have made complete sense if he just said “what president”.
