Here was my recent-convert take on it the other day:

As far as I know, it started on 4chan. "newfag", "oldfag", etc. It was because anonymity online was a new concept and everyone could be edgy with no consequences. They liked calling each other various slurs because it was funny. It still is.
Contrary to the popular belief that this was born on the chan boards, this was old IRC speak from the late 80's and early 90's from my experiences... back then I was a newfag.

It originated from the Chans. IOne good thing is that it takes the negativity out of the word as a derogatory and actually empowers it.
Part of it is rooted in the shock culture. Saying shit that would offend people just because they get offended by it.
