Only gold was confiscated, not silver. And individuals were allowed to keep some gold coins - 5, if I remember correctly. Also many people turned their gold coins into charms/jewelry so they were allowed to keep them. It was government overreach for sure, but people found ways to work around it. I understand your point and feel it is worth considering, but we should at least get the facts surrounding the 1933 gold-confiscation correct.
Yes. I got a few pre 1933 gold coins so they sure didn't get em all. Just I'd hate to see the gold rip off again.
Part of it was that the "numismatic" stuff wasn't outlawed. That exemption has had some people decide to invest in more non-generic stuff just in case a similar confiscation happened today. It seems as if FDR only wanted all government minted coinage back in the government vaults. Jewelry or other ornamental items not used in everyday transactions weren't high on their list, so there wasn't an urgent rush to confiscate it.
