Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained amid reports a military coup is underway in the country.
The National League for Democracy, Myanmar's governing party, said that Suu Kyi and other senior figures from the ruling party have been detained in an early morning raid.
The move comes after days of escalating tension between the civilian government and the powerful military that stirred fears of a coup in the aftermath of an election the army says was fraudulent.
Spokesman Myo Nyunt told Reuters by phone that Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other leaders had been 'taken' in the early hours of the morning.
'I want to tell our people not to respond rashly and I want them to act according to the law,' he said, adding he also expected to be detained.

Bring those guys over here so they can show the US military how it is done... apparently somebody has to.
Except they seem to be coming and going, and the soldiers are on the outside of the gate keeping people out.
If youre trusting the military of Myanmar to do this "the right way" then I think you may want to look at their history.
Consider optics.. if you're looking at the Myanmar military only through the MSM view of the oh-so-opressed Rohingya minority who didn't want anything bad, just peaceful Sharia law in Myanmar (think what the Rambo IV movie didn't tell you) then yes, they are only baaaad and nothing else.
This. The fact that the MSM has been kissing Ang San Si Kyii’s ass for years makes me give her the side eye tbh. Don’t know a lot about Myanmar/Burma but if the media are singing someone’s praises a la Tony Blair, Obama, Biden etc I’m going to be sceptical about their status as a good guy to say the least
Exactly.. Aung San Suu Kyi has been awarded Nobel Peace Prize, Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, Rafto Memorial Prize human rights award, Congressional Gold Medal under GWB and even International Simón Bolívar Prize of the Government of Venezuela, do we need to know more?
Oh yes, we do.. maybe about how she met Soros back in 2017.. Who do you think her handlers are? https://www.nationthailand.com/news/30303952
This is the right take. As an ethnic Asian person myself (also having lived in Southeast Asia for a good part of my life), I can say that the real situation in many of these countries is often far more complex than the simplistic narratives portrayed in Western media. I should also add that the following quote from the Philippines’ Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin is interesting:
Oh is this the new ”WhItEhOuSe GoInG dArK iS nOrMaL!”?
calm down dude. everything is happening at the exact moment that it should.
