For a lot of older files for computers you could not use spacebar so the underscore is used as a space instead. Would help get it around a keyword search as well
I'm pretty sure that if you used Google (let alone what tools the government have) I'm pretty sure that if you searched either "Castle" or "Rock" and one of the items was "CASTLE_ROCK" - i do believe it WOULD return as a result.
I do NOT believe that underscores & such, hamper the ability to search for terms, as you state.
