Rome is a significant religious and spiritual location for many Christian faiths and sects. Because of the role it played in the history of Christianity and the fact multiple saints have been buried within it.
I suppose it’s more apt to say. Rome itself doesn’t matter. It’s what it represents. That gives it its significance.
As for whether or not Catholicism can be considered Christian. That is an argument out of my range of expertise. Better suited for theologians and clergymen.
The only significance of Rome is when Paul (Saul) appealed to Caesar. And Caesar saw no wrong with him. I don't know any other significant about Rome and Christianity.
