Yeah man. Back in my high school days the emos were the most likely the ones to be vocal about things like sexual abuse, anti-war stuff (actually knew some girls who got kicked out school for that stuff), drug abuse and self abuse. They were generally the people who were likely to be (or were) the victims of these things.
Emo here. Still enjoy the bands and style, but you're totally right. I, like many of my fellow emo friends, were either abused, or ignored by siblings, parents or both.
In my case, it was purely ignorance. My parents were both very busy, corporate and scientific people, so they didn't have much time for the older kids (such as myself), later on things changed for the better.
