I live Northeast of Houston. We lost power at my house for 25 hours during the worst of it.
We made sure to have plenty of firewood and kept the fireplace hot.
We bought large amounts of bottled water days ahead of the freeze.
We shut off water at the street before the freeze started and then bled all the pipes in the house, covered up outdoor pipes.
We filled up bathtubs full of water for flushing toilets.
Got the kids involved too. They knew what to do without being told.
Everyone got through it OK. I realize that elderly and disabled people can't do for themselves, but for most people it seems to be lack of education. Maybe instead of teaching 59 genders in school and being ashamed of your own history, we should teach emergency preparedness instead?
I was thinking that ... I see people's point about how they should have been prepared but don't we sort of operate under the assumption here that we need to be prepared because others probably won't?
I have a family of five and I'm prepped for 60 days/20 people.
Why?
Because the rest of the world doesn't see shit like we do. They will be unprepared and when the cousins and uncles and neighbors show up, they'll need help.
This dude is pissed because people are looking to him for answers but him and his administration got elected because they said they had the answers. It's his job to ensure his citizens are provided with the utilities they pay for.
From what I understand it's a power transmission problem, not a natural disaster, that is responsible for most of the outages. YES. The weather is the cause but not because of physical damage. The weather just made the inadequacy of the power grid noticeable.
Mother nature gave it a Pen Test and it failed.
He doesn't get to say, "quit being lazy" and quit.
Fuck him, he's a pussy that should have never been in a position of authority.
What an idiot. He should probably move....like now.....the town (Colorado City, TX), has 4200 people in it. My guess is about half are looking for his stupid ass right now.
That's funny ... I looked at my wife when I read the article and said, "If I lived in that town I'd get off my frozen, lazy, ass and go knocking on his door ready to do something about the situation."
Although as the major he should be the one leading his town...he’ll, this is a great opportunity to become a freakin hero right here. But having said that, every head of a family. Woman or man alike should behave like I just wrote below.
He clearly states that you should have a plan for when things go wrong. I grew up “socialist” Cuba. Do you know what we did when there was no power or water or food? We freakin dealt with it ourselves. Because the government sure as heck was not going to do shit for us. 20 years later here in the USA I keep back up water, food, have the means to make a fire and tools to procure food and water if push comes to shove. Hell I even have back up stuff like like medkits. My family will always always have a back up plan if things were to go wrong. I am not even on prepper status. Hell at the very least you should have a bug out bag and plan. Even staying at a camping site on you car in Florida would be better than Texas right now. Here is some ideas. Procure wood. Find an appropriate location make a fire. Reach out to your neighbors help each other.
Ironically, people from Cali are very familiar with this. The local power utilities have been cutting power in Cali for years to avoid responsibility for fires.
I'm not knocking your preparedness, in fact I think everyone should be prepared, but condoning being prepared is not what the mayor was doing and let's face it; most Californians probably didn't prepare for shit like this because they should, they did it out of necessity.
Why?
Incompetent leadership.
That's what this is about, incompetent leadership not whether or not Texans should have been prepared.
Beware of being heartless, leaders lead and send in emergency aid during disasters. Preppers are indeed awesome, capable and forward thinking. There’s lots of reasons people would be caught unprepared or just incapable of doing all the ingenious things one can do.
A lot of people are sick, and out of work or both. How ya gunna prepare when you’re hardly able to feed yourself?
I don't doubt that there are actually people who need help during this, but I feel this mayor's pain. We have grown relatives in Texas (I'm talking in their 30's) right now who did absolutely nothing to prepare for this weather event. Grown, educated adults with plenty of money- they're quite well off- who knew this was coming but did nothing to get ready for it. They did not stock up on firewood (they have a fireplace), food or water, or FORMULA FOR THEIR BABY, etc. They could have easily afforded a nice generator or at the least, space heaters for when the power cycles on (it's too cold for their heat pump to warm the house for the short time they do have power.) They did nothing ahead of time to protect their pipes from freezing. And now they're complaining that they don't have water or food, are cold, can't get formula, etc.
If they weren't grown people who should know better I would feel sorry for them but I don't. I'm disgusted with them. (Although I do feel sorry for the kids, ugh.) I know people around them warned them ahead of time. So in their case, they have no one to blame but themselves. On the other hand, I can see that there are folks who are not able to prepare for whatever reason, and I would hope that their local government has something set up for them. It's just people like our relatives are an added burden now who will take resources from others who could not help themselves, simply because they will need assistance/help when they could have easily prepared.
My son fits this description exactly, we told him weeks ago to prepare. One of my kids listened, the other one didn't. Both my kids think I wear a tin foil hat. Both are without power, one is comfortable & the other one is complaining about Gov. Abbott.
I was agreeing with you! Sorry if it seemed like I wasn't- I've been aggravated about those dummies all day long and I guess that came through in my comment. Lol.

Well said!
Well said indeed!

Absolutely!
Of course the bitch used the wrong 'you're' towards the end.

Nope
I don’t have issue with what he said. I think your commentary demonstrates his point.

Totally agreeing with you too! ? just staining bc it seems like several people are butt hurt over this.
Ya he’s wrong
for some reason this comment just cracked me up! Thank you, I am still laughing.
