Gee whizz getting right into the code! I'm not familiar with writing css files except for copy-pasting pre-written code. Would you have code that I could use for this?
You misunderstood what I mean by blank space. I didn't mean the text " ", I actually meant there's nothing to see there. That means that any post with emopepescroll or emoconfused ends up looking empty if it's plastered across all the replies in the board. I'd have no clue that it was ever there if someone used emoconfused in reply to my post, which would completely change how I reply to that person because I might not know that they were confused, or that there was excitement in a particular post if they used emopepescroll.
The alternative is to enable the gif emojis which would induce motion sickness each time I browsed the board with said gif emojis.
And as for using an alternative background image, that's a lot of work to get the gifs to stop. Is there no other way to stop the animation?

Nice, although I still get the blank space. Anyway to replace the gifs with a static image or placeholder text so that I know something was there?
e.g.
[href="/u/#emopepescroll"] {
/code to display placeholder text/ }
[href="/u/#emoconfused"] {
/code to display placeholder text/ }
