There'd be no better way to get the public's undivided attention. And it would make the sudden activation of the EBS believable.

And another thought: if this does end up becoming Sum of All Fears,

1: I believe space force is prepared to shoot down anything they can fire at us or our allies (super duper missile) and 2: the nuclear material used would lead back to Uranium 1 and the Iran Deal. If we didn't have grounds to prosecute Hussein and HRC for treason before, we sure as hell would then.
