The exchange of "noble manly nod"...I enjoy it as well. Almost as much as I enjoy the response I get from little ones that can actually see me smile at them. They're always zoned out, but snap out of it the second someone smiles at them. Can't believe these parents don't realize what they're doing to their children...
I know, I feel bad for the kids. That zoned out look is real, I've seen it dozens of times. I enjoy talking to the checkout clerks too. For a brief second they are shocked like "someone's actually talking to me, and...they're happy? They aren't scared or angry?" Then they brighten up with a big smile, I joke and laugh with them just like the old days... I've had one clerk say to me "Next time you come to our store, make sure you come to my line to check out!"

I literally could have written each and every word of this. Same exact experiences!
