As I have said elsewhere, the left really hates Russia for giving up the dream of Communism. basically makes them heretics to the lefties. And for most of the supposed right it seems the cold war era propaganda gets activated just by referring to Russia.

It could also be that they're trying to build on the foundation of Cold War hysteria against Russia. It was real, they think it would be fairly easy to reconstitute this. Can't use China as the bad guy because they need US sentiment to be sympathetic to Xi and the like.
