I'm surprised nobody is asking how they are going bankrupt when they got millions of people who give their tithes each week.
Also was raised catholic and there was diligence in paying tithes each week. I'm sure millions of others did the same.
I’m pretty sure a lot of people “woke up” when the scandals from the LA Archdiocese came out back in The early 2000s and stopped supporting/tithing to the church. At least that’s what I did, I never tithed in the true sense, but I would donate a decent check every year to our local parish that fed directly into the LA Archdiocese. I haven’t given them a dime in over 20 years and haven’t regretted at all.
In my diocese, the parish has to give a certain percentage of the offertory collection to the diocese. Other collections, like Christmas, Easter, building funds, etc, stay completely in the parish. Special collections go off to that collection. So one could support their parish by giving only to the Christmas and Easter collection but not to the offertory, if they don't want money going to their bishop.
I think the Vatican is funded by the annual Peter's Pence collection, investments, tourism, and wherever else they get their money. Who knows.
Remember, those tithes are property of the individual dioceses when the Vatican wants to funnel the money.
I had assumed that tithes would trickle up.
Thanks for clarifying.
