If they have a modicum of intelligence about financial matters (and I think there is enough brainpower in the Vatican to understand these sorts of things) then the Catholic Church would put itself in a position where it doesn't matter how much or how little its members give in a given day, month, year or decade. With literally billions of people calling themselves Catholic, this would be a very wise course of action.
Someone cleaned out their savings account and their assets. Now the people they borrowed from are calling.
It’s more likely the faithful give this version of the Church a shove into the abyss by withholding donations.
The Vatican was beyond wealthy.
No drop in donations would have put a dent in those evil coffers.
