I had heard a while ago that during Hussein's presidency, he would call senior military folks and ask them a question: "Would you shoot at an American citizen if ordered to do so?" If they answered No he would demote them of fire them.

I don't know if this was literally true, but I think it describes figuratively what happened to military. Its only the Special Forces that has stayed patriotic.
