Everyone is told they're special without having to work for anything now.

Yes, when you are a child you are special. You have essentially infinite potential ahead of you, you just have to have the right guidance and be instilled with a work ethic to propel yourself forward.

As an adult, your potential is only what you make it, and you are no longer special.

At least the age before participation trophies motivated kids to try harder.
