Locusts and cicadas are not the same thing, although some people use the name interchangeably. Cicadas will not wipe out crops. They mostly drink from plants, namely trees. Adult cicadas main goal is to mate.

Yeah we call them laughing or cackling monkeys. My wife hates them. Drives her mad. I like them, though they can get VERY loud and make it hard to sleep.
