No I don't really think so they are just sort of a thing. Here's a tip construction disturbs the babies so if you are in really old neighborhoods you are likely to see more vs new developments. Again has nothing to do with anything really its just their life cycle. 17 years in ground a few weeks above. The one in the photo seems to be the wrong species the 17 year ones have red eyes... Also I was in a state that was hard hit last time, expect people to claim that they are "cut" by the bugs. See the female cuts little slices into the branches of trees to lay their eggs if you have young trees this can kill them but for established trees apparently it's good for tree health. Anyhow a bunch of people I was around last time the bugs were out tired to make it a bigger deal than it was claiming the females cut them by mistake. I would just expect to see loads of posts eithers of photos or noise or these phantom "cuts" on the Social Media should be a ton of people making it a huge deal. I think it's neat, really is spectacular.
